Anti-icing involves applying liquid deicing chemicals directly onto pavement prior to a storm, in order to break the bond between ice and pavement and speed its melting. Furthermore, anti-icing requires one quarter less salt than traditional deicing strategies do and works faster.

Less Salt

As roads become treacherous in a snowstorm, drivers and pedestrians attempt to navigate it safely. Ware Landscaping provides residential driveway and sidewalk de-icing services that will make sure your property remains safe throughout winter months.

By applying chemical anti-icing treatments prior to a snow event, ice will be prevented from bonding to pavement, thus decreasing the need for deicing salt after storms have passed and saving both time and money for both Village residents and its crew members alike. It also reduces expensive overtime for staff.

Many communities employ improved winter maintenance practices to reduce the amount of salt used on their streets, parking lots, and sidewalks. These strategies include using salt more effectively (spreading it where ice may form more readily), anti-icing measures and restricting cul-de-sac salting. This Salt Smart approach also helps minimize chlorides washing off into local rivers and streams that contaminate our waterways while endangering fish species and wildlife alike.

Less Water Pollution

Chlorides found in de-icing materials used on roads and sidewalks may impact water quality when carried off from surfaces into storm drains or streams, known as chloride runoff.

Naperville is taking steps to limit the amount of salt entering its waterways by employing pre-wetting and anti-icing applications which are more efficient and safer than standard de-icing practices.

Pre-wetting involves spraying streets with a liquid mixture before an anticipated snowfall to start melting snow and ice quickly and prevent it from bonding to road surfaces, giving snow-fighting crews time to respond appropriately.

The City is also making strides toward sustainability by using more eco-friendly geo-melt blends and wetting salt before application in order to minimize chemical consumption. Learn more about these programs and other green initiatives through its Open Checkbook website.

Less Waste

Naperville salts more than 1,500 miles of roadway during winter weather, including major roads, residential streets, cul-de-sacs, alleys and parking lots. As the snow melts away, the ice-fighting chemicals disintegrate into the pavement, meaning less of it needs to be used after each storm as cleanup material; furthermore, anti-icing applications can be applied during regular working hours, thus cutting costs on overtime hours.

Naperville first implemented anti-icing techniques during its inaugural winter and witnessed a reduction in police callouts due to slippery roads of over 50 percent. Since then, these types of calls have continued to decline steadily.

Ben Mjolsness of Naperville Parks and Recreation discusses their Salt Smart approach to winter maintenance by applying liquid deicing solutions prior to storms on sidewalks and parking lots, saving salt, labor hours and minimizing environmental pollution by chloride-based products affecting local waterways. Less Time

Anti-icing chemicals can be applied during storms to stop snow and ice from bonding to the pavement, decreasing clean-up time after each storm while cutting labor costs by shortening deicing times and labor costs. Furthermore, since anti-icing uses liquid rather than solid rock salt for application during regular working hours and stays on roads longer to reduce waste; additionally Naperville began applying anti-icing twice weekly after police call-outs decreased significantly – giving more time to clear driveways, sidewalks, and stairs!
