Here are a few tips for exploring these stunning natural attractions:
Make sure to pack plenty of water; the trails don’t offer shade and can quickly become overheated during summer hikes. Wear insect repellent and sunscreen; it is also beneficial to bring along a flashlight for nighttime walks during these seasons.
McDowell Grove lies along the West Branch DuPage River, providing fishing opportunities and drawing waterfowl into its wooded areas. These wooded areas also host an array of springtime wildflowers as well as fall blooming varieties.
This forest preserve boasts more than seven miles of walking trails crafted of grass and limestone paths, making for ideal terrain for hiking, bicycling or running. Picnic areas abound here as well as access to West Branch DuPage River for fishing and boating – beautiful surroundings can also be seen throughout. Wildlife can often be seen here.
McDowell Grove was originally established by Civilian Conservation Corps workers who constructed many of the structures you see today. During World War II, this area served as a radar training center; today it’s popular among hikers and birders.
Many trails in this area are suitable for horseback riding, so if you plan to bring yours along be sure to secure the necessary license and safety gear beforehand. Also, ensure your animal has all its vaccinations up-to-date as well as an equine health certificate.

Be sure to visit the park’s event calendar, as they offer various community programs and activities throughout the year. Each month they also host “Third Thursday,” where free admission is granted for visitors – making this an economical way of enjoying an evening out without breaking the bank! Plus you might get lucky and find live music performances at certain of these events!
